Manually syncing your iPad helps you keep your media files portable without them taking up space on your computer's hard drive

The default settings on your iPad and iTunes software on your computer are set to automatically synchronize all your media files between the two systems. When you connect an iPad to a desktop or laptop computer, it will add any new files found in the iTunes library to your iPad. At the same time, it will delete anything still found on the iPad, but which you have since deleted from your iTunes library. Changing these settings will allow you to keep files on your iPad without having them take up space on your computer's hard drive.

Instructions

  1. Set Up Manual Syncing

    • 1

Connect the iPad to a laptop or desktop computer using the USB cable provided with the device.

    • 2

Open iTunes if it does not open automatically. Select your device from the menu at the left of the window, then click the "Summary" tab.

    • 3

Select "Manually manage music and videos," then click "Apply." Your iPad will no longer sync automatically every time you connect it to your computer.

    Deleting Movies from a Computer

    • 4

Play the movie from your iPad before deleting it from your computer so you know the file is present and works.

    • 5

Scroll to the file in your iTunes library, right click on it and select "Show in explorer" on your PC or "Show in finder" on your Mac computer.

    • 6

Delete the file from your computer by dragging it into the trash or recycling bin. The file will remain listed in your iTunes library, but the program will not be able to find and play it once it has been deleted. Since your iPad now requires manual syncing, it will not be deleted from the tablet the next time you connect it to a computer.

Add music and video files to your iPad manually. Do this by selecting them from your iTunes library and dragging them to the iPad icon in your devices list in iTunes.
