Strive for excellence in your job interviews, even if you're a teen. You might believe that companies only use teens as cheap labor. This is true for some companies, but not all. Managers want to hire teens who show they are responsible by planning ahead for the interview — particularly by knowing why you want the job. Put in time today to plan out your interview answers so that later in life, when you apply for a higher-paying job, you'll have practiced and know how to answer effectively.

Instructions

    • 1

Research the company by visiting its website. Notice the purpose of the company and how it serves its customers.

    • 2

Write down five ways you can help the company fulfill its purpose and serve its customer base. For example, if the job is in retail, you might write down that your outgoing personality allows you to answer customers’ questions to find them the right product.

    • 3

Write down five things that you want from the job. Think beyond the paycheck. The job might teach you specific skills you want to learn, or the company may have a purpose about which you feel passionate.

    • 4

Craft a one-or-two-sentence statement that uses two of the ways you can serve the company and two things you want out of the job. Arrange them so that you mention your value to the company first and last. Ask your parent or an adult in the field for advice about which of the items on your list you should use.
