How to Crochet a Thick String
When learning to crochet, it is easier to learn with an afghan hook and thicker yarn because you can see your stitches more easily. Also, the thicker the yarn you use, the easier it is to hook onto your stitches when you are doing a traditional chain stitch used in crocheting. Crocheting with a thicker string rather than thin crochet yarn uses the same technique. Once you’ve mastered using a thick string, try your skills using a regular-sized crochet hook and thin string.

Casting On
-
1
Grab the end of the yarn and fold it into a loop, 5 or 6 inches from the end of the string.
-
2
Put the hook inside the loop and then grab the back of the loop with a crochet hook. Pull the back of the loop through so you have a slip knot on the hook.
-
-
3
Pull the tail end of the yarn to tighten the slip knot onto the hook. You are now ready to begin crocheting.
Chain Stitch
-
4
Hold the hook in your dominant hand and grab the yarn attached to the ball in your other hand. Drape the yarn over your index finger.
-
5
Use your finger to wrap the yarn around the hook from underneath so it comes over the right side of the hook.
-
6
Pull the hook backward so the slip knot goes underneath the loop you just created. This is a chain stitch.
-
7
Continue the technique of wrapping the thread and pulling it underneath the previous loop. When your pattern requires you to chain a certain amount of stitches — indicated by the letters ch — do not count your first slip knot as a chain stitch.
