How to Antique a Bible Leaf Frame

How to Antique a Bible Leaf Frame thumbnail
Some Bible pages contain elaborate art.

A Bible leaf frame is meant to hold a page from a Bible. This can protect the Bible page and prevent any dust, dirt and other damage from ruining it. Often these frames are used for the pages of an antique Bible that has fallen apart, leaving just loose pages behind. Pages that needed to be protected should be framed. For making that frame match the age of the Bible page and give it a more authentic look, use the antiquing process.

Instructions

    • 1

Wipe the surface of the frame with a damp cloth to remove any dust. This will create a better bond between the paint and the frame. Dry the frame thoroughly with a clean, dry cloth.

    • 2

Disassemble the frame. Remove the glass and any backing from the frame to prevent paint from getting on these pieces.

    • 3

Apply a layer of paint with a paintbrush. Spread the paint evenly and cover the entire surface of the frame, including all parts that will be visible upon hanging the frame.

    • 4

Allow the paint to thoroughly dry. Dry paint will not be tacky to the touch.

    • 5

Apply a layer of crackle glaze over the paint. This crackle glaze is meant to break apart the layer of paint and create a worn look. Use a crackle glaze that is meant for your type of paint (oil- or water-based). Spread the crackle glaze evenly over the entire area of the painted frame.

    • 6

Allow the crackle glazes to dry fully. Dry crackle glaze will not be tacky to the touch. Check with the glaze packaging for a recommended drying time, as the needed time will vary depending on the brand and type of glaze.

    • 7

Sand the surface of the painted and glazed frame to add to the worn look. There is no exact needed amount of sanding. Do this until you have reached your desired look. Use a grade of sandpaper that will help you reach your desired look.

    • 8

Wipe the surface of the sanded frame with a dry cloth to remove the dust created from sanding.

    • 9

Tap the tip of a nail into a random location on the frame with a hammer to add to the worn look. There is no exact number of holes needed. Make enough holes to achieve your desired appearance.

    • 10

Reassemble the frame and place the Bible leaf between the glass and the backing of the frame.
