How to Join Aran Crochet Squares

How to Join Aran Crochet Squares thumbnail
Join squares to create a crocheted piece any size or shape you wish.

Many crocheted items are made by joining individually crocheted squares together. The squares are often referred to as Afghan, Aran or Granny squares. The name refers to the pattern of the square. No matter what type of pattern, the squares must be joined one by one, using the same yarn to join them that you used to crochet the piece. Household items such as blankets and table cloths as well as clothes such as shawls and vests can be made this way.

Instructions

    • 1

Stack two squares together with the right sides facing each other.

    • 2

Create a stitch on the crochet hook by looping the yarn around the hook and then looping the yarn again and pulling it through. Leave the stitch on the hook.

    • 3

Start at the upper right corner of the squares. Insert the crochet hook under the two loops of yarn that form the first stitch on the square that is closest to you and then insert the hook under the two loops that form a stitch on the square behind it.

    • 4

Place the yarn over the squares and then loop it over the crochet hook. Catch the loop and draw it through both squares.

    • 5

Move to the stitch just to the left of the one you previously used. Insert the crochet hook beneath the two loops that form the stitch on the square closest to you, and the square just behind it. Place the yarn over the squares and then loop it over the crochet hook and draw it through both squares.

    • 6

Continue as above all the way to the end of the row and then knot the yarn used to join the squares and cut with a scissor. Two squares are now joined on one end.

    • 7

Take a third square and place it with the right side facing the right side of one of the joined squares. Repeat the steps above to join this square to one of the others. Continue to add squares to create the finished shape desired.

Tips & Warnings

  • Place the wrong sides of the squares together if you wish the stitches used to join them to show.

  • Use a different color yarn for the joined stitches if you wish to make them a prominent part of the design.
