How to Improve Your Creative Drawing Skills thumbnail
People of all ages can improve their creative drawing skills.

People who practice their creative drawing skills are able to view their surroundings and creatively represent them on paper. Creative drawing can stand alone as an art form or it can be the basis of other types of art. Drawing is a skill that takes years to develop, but people can quickly improve by performing creative drawing exercises. These exercises not only improve drawing technique, but they also teach creative thinking that can be used outside of art.

Instructions

  1. Creative Drawing Game

    • 1

Write down a list of five people, characters or things on the blue paper. Think of five verbs and write them down on the green paper. Write five locations on the yellow paper.

    • 2

Cut out each of the words. Fold the paper strips so you cannot see the words and put them in the hat. Shake the hat so the colored papers mix up.

    • 3

Draw three lines or geometric designs on the white paper with the pencil. Pick one yellow, one blue and one green piece of paper out of the hat. Unfold the paper and read the words.

    • 4

Draw a picture of the words on the white paper. Include the geometric shapes or lines that you drew in the picture. Do not erase any mistakes.

    Gestural Drawing

    • 5

Have your assistant pose in front of you. Position the white paper so you can draw on it easily. Stand in front of the paper and relax your arm, finger and wrist muscles.

    • 6

Look at your assistant's pose and imagine how the pose would feel. Draw the pose without letting the pencil move off the paper. Look at your assistant and avoid looking at your drawing.

    • 7

Draw the most dynamic parts of your assistant's pose, such as stretched muscles. Avoid adding detail to the picture. Draw only the basic shape of the pose. Stop drawing after 15 to 30 seconds.
