How to Make a Flute Out of a Poster Tube

A flute is a reed-less instrument that produces sound from the flow of air across an opening. When introducing children to instruments, you can make an improvised flute from a poster tube. Cut holes in the tube and use other craft materials to seal and stylize the instrument. Kids can then practice playing the flute by covering the various holes to make sounds of different tones.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut a 12-1/2 inch long section of poster tube.

    • 2

Make a mark 2-1/2 inches from the end of the tube. Make another mark 3/4 inch around the tube from the first mark. Draw a 3/8-inch line through the first mark, perpendicular to the length of the tube. Do the same on the second mark. Join the lines at the ends. This is the mouthpiece mark.

    • 3

Measure 5 inches down the length from the mouthpiece mark. Mark the spot. Continue to do this four more times with spaces of one inch between each mark. These marks are for the finger holes.

    • 4

Cut out the mouthpiece and the finger holes with a craft knife. Twist the point of a pair of scissors in the finger holes to make them slightly larger.

    • 5

Seal the mouthpiece end of the tube with tape. Use colored tape wrapped around the body of the flute to decorate it as you like. Apply a small piece of tape to each long end of the mouthpiece as protectors.

    • 6

Blow across the mouthpiece to play the flute and cover the holes to produce different tones.
