How to Remove a Dodge 1500 Shift Knob

by Josh Baum

Removing the shift knob on a Dodge 1500 is a quick and easy job. You might want to do this if you have an aftermarket shift knob that you would like to install, or if your current shift knob feels loose or makes a rattling noise. In such cases, simply removing the shift knob and reinstalling it can make all the difference.

Step 1

Carefully stick the blade of a small flat-head screwdriver under the circular plate on the top of the shift knob. The circular plate has the shift pattern printed on it. Pry the plate up slightly, then carefully work your way around it, prying it up as you go.

Step 2

Lift the plate completely off of the knob and set it aside.

Step 3

Use a socket wrench to remove the lock nut underneath the removable plate.

Step 4

Twist the gear shift knob to the left. This may be hard at first, but once you get it going, it will unscrew easily. Continue turning it to the left until the knob pulls off.
