How to Crochet a Whip Stitch

The whip stitch is used when joining crocheted rows. This stitch is useful when you are going to join two crocheted items together, such as two granny squares for an afghan. The whip stitch is generally used to join the smaller stitches, as in the single crocheted stitch. You use the whip stitch the to join the last row of each item together, such as when sewing two pieces of fabric together.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the two crocheted pieces with the right sides facing together. Match the stitches up so the two pieces are evenly matched along the edge, and each stitch is even with the stitch on the other piece.

    • 2

Thread an embroidery needle with yarn and insert it into the first stitch. Push the needle through both of the pieces that you are joining. Pull the yarn tightly so that the two pieces you are joining sit snugly against each other, then draw the needle up and over the top of the end rows and insert the needle into the next stitch.

    • 3

Continue in this manner across the edge of the two pieces you are joining until you have reached the end.

Cut the yarn one inch from the hook. Weave the yarn in and out through a row of stitches to hide the yarn.
