How to Replace Moldy Bathtub Caulk Using Bleach

When the caulk around the rim of your bathtub gets moldy and crumbly, that can allow moisture to get behind it. By replacing the caulk, you can avoid other problems. Bleach ensures that all of the mold and mildew is dead in the line before you lay more caulk. Filling the tub with water before you caulk is a good idea, because tubs drop slightly when full, and you want that line around the rim to be at its widest point when you install the caulk. Instructions

    • 1

Cut away the old caulk from the bathtub borders by using a razor knife.

    • 2

      Fill the tub with water.

    • 3

Pour a little bleach over a toothbrush and use it to scrub the joint where you removed the caulk. Rinse to remove all the loose debris. Repeat until the line is completely clean. Let it dry.

    • 4

Load a caulk tube into the caulk gun. Cut off the nozzle of the tube at a 45-degree angle, so you have a diagonal hole ¼ inch across.

    • 5

Slide a long nail into the hole to break the seal inside.

    • 6

Hold the tip of the tube to one end of the joint where you removed the caulk. Tilt the gun slightly back. Squeeze the trigger to push caulk up and out the tip.

    • 7

Pull the caulk gun backward along the line, continuing to squeeze the trigger so it lays a smooth, even bead of caulk along the whole line.

    • 8

Wet your thumb in the tub and run it along the caulk, smoothing it out. Let the caulk dry for 24 hours. Leave the tub full while the caulk dries.
