DIY Kazoo

Make a homemade version of this fun instrument using an empty toilet paper tube.

Young children enjoy making noise and often resort to banging their hands and various objects on hard surfaces to achieve this. Turn your child's noisemaking into a constructive activity by crafting a do-it-yourself kazoo together; your child will learn how to make his very own instrument, and once it's complete, he'll be able to play it to his heart's content. Making a kazoo is also a fun activity for a children's music class or day camp.

Instructions

    • 1

Decorate the outside of an empty toilet paper tube using markers, paint, colored pencils and other craft supplies. Draw images on the toilet paper tube or simply paint it a solid color.

    • 2

Use the end of a pair of scissors to make a small hole approximately one-third from one end of the decorated toilet paper tube.

    • 3

Cut a section of wax paper so that it's large enough to cover one end of the toilet paper tube, with some left over.

    • 4

Use an elastic band to secure the wax paper over the end of the toilet paper tube that's closest to the hole that you made in Step 2.

    • 5

Play your do-it-yourself kazoo by humming into the end that isn't covered by wax paper.

Tips & Warnings

  • Combine homemade kazoos with other homemade instruments, such as drums made from small buckets or guitars made from shoe boxes.

  • Exercise caution when working with sharp scissors.
