Fusible Applique Instructions

Fusible Applique Instructions thumbnail
Applique is used to add decorative shapes to larger pieces of fabric.

Applique is the act of sewing smaller pieces of fabric onto a larger piece of fabric. It's commonly used in quilting, where you would applique a design onto a quilt block. Applique can be done without fusible web, but it's considerably faster and easier if you use it. Fusible webbing creates a semi-permanent bond between the applique and the fabric that it's placed onto, allowing you the ability to sew the edges on at your leisure with minimal risk of the applique shifting.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine what applique you're going to use. If you can't find an applique pattern you like, consider using a picture from a child's coloring book. You need something with simple, clear lines.

    • 2

Trace the edges of your design onto the paper side of the fusible webbing.

    • 3

Fuse the webbing to the fabric you will use for the applique. This usually requires pressing it firmly with an iron. Check your fusible webbing package directions for the temperature of the iron and the amount of time that you press it.

    • 4

Cut along the traced lines of the fusible web. You should now have your exact applique with fabric on one side and paper on the other.

    • 5

Remove the paper from the applique.

    • 6

Place the applique fabric side up on the background piece of fabric in its permanent location. Fuse the applique to the background fabric per the manufacturer's instructions.

    • 7

Sew around the edges of the applique to prevent it from separating from the background fabric.

Tips & Warnings

  • Machine stitch or hand stitch around the applique.

  • Be careful when ironing the fusible web to your applique fabric; if the fusible web comes in contact with your ironing board, it could fuse to the board. Use a piece of scrap fabric underneath your applique fabric to ensure that this doesn't happen.
