How to Remove the Power Steering Pump From a Chevy Lumina

by Amy Rozanski-harlach

The process of removing the power steering pump from a Chevy Lumina breaks down into several steps. The model year and engine type may vary, but the process is the same. Follow all instructions carefully and make sure the car is not running when removing the power steering pump.

Step 1

Disconnect the negative battery cable before you begin.

Step 2

Remove the serpentine drive belt.

Step 3

Place a container or drip pan of some sort under the power steering pump to collect any fluid that may leak out while in the process of removing the pump. After this is in place, disconnect the pressure pipe from the power steering pump.

Step 4

Loosen the hose clamp and disconnect the return hose from the reservoir.

Step 5

Remove the bolts that keep the unit mounted onto the car. It's a tight squeeze, but you can access them through holes in the pulley. The last bolt is in the back of the power steering pump. Once this has been taken out, remove the power steering pump.
