Felt is easy to cut into the shapes you want.

Felt wreaths are full of folk art charm and warm, bright colors. Felt is a no-fray fabric that is easy to work with and inexpensive to purchase. Felt is available in small 12-inch squares or by the yard, and most stores have a large variety of colors because felt is like the fabric version of construction paper, as it is used in a wide variety of school and craft projects. Add a scalloped edge to your felt wreath and adornments like pearl pins. Making the wreath takes only a few hours.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut 1-inch strips of felt in two contrasting colors using a scallop edging scissors.

    • 2

Overlap one strip 1/4 inch over the other so the scalloped edge is highlighted. Hot glue the overlapped area together to form one strip with two colors of felt.

    • 3

Position the two-part strip at a 45-degree angle on the back side of the wreath foam. Insert straight pins through the felt to hold it in place. When your angle is to your right, your scalloped edge should be to the left. When your angle is to your left, your scalloped edge should be to the right. As soon you begin wrapping the wreath curve, you will know if you have it correct. The scallops should wrap 1/4 inch over the edge of the existing felt to always show the scallops. Insert straight pins along the back side of the wreath every inch. Wrap the entire wreath. Start and stop new strips on the back side of the wreath.

    • 4

Draw three sets of four circles from the size of a quarter to the size of an average aluminum can. Draw scallop or leaf shapes along the edges. The side of the scallop or leaf should stop 1/2 inch from your circle center. Make one set of round scallop shapes with larger scallops on the large circle and smaller ones for each progressively smaller circle. Make one set with pointed petals and one set with long thin petals.

    • 5

Use your petal patterns to cut out felt. All four circles in one set are for one flower. After cutting out the petal circles, crease each petal by folding it in half along its length. Usually you can crease with your fingers. Crease all of the petals in one direction. Place the petal circles with the large on the bottom and progressively smaller on top with the crease side down.

    • 6

Insert a large pearl pin into the center of the flower and press the pinned flower onto the wreath. Add all three kinds of flowers to the wreath using the same technique. Cut out small green leaves and tuck them under the flower edges and attach them with straight pins. Continue until your wreath looks the way you want.
