Testing a Built-in Thermometer for a GE Profile Oven

General Electric ovens have a thermometer, also known as an oven sensor, located in the oven compartment. The oven sensor is installed on the upper portion of the rear oven wall, often on the base of the broil element. The purpose of the thermometer is to monitor the internal temperature of the oven and transmit the information to the electronic oven control. The electronic oven control uses the temperature, which is measured in ohms, as a basis to determine whether to turn the oven elements on or off. If the thermometer fails, the electronic oven control will not heat the oven to the proper temperature. To test the thermometer, remove it from the oven and use a multimeter to check its continuity. Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the range breaker in your service panel to prevent electrical shock.

    • 2

Open the oven door, and then remove the oven racks.

    • 3

Locate the oven sensor, which is placed in the center of the top of the rear oven wall, often on the base of the broil element.

    • 4

Remove the mounting screws securing the sensor into position and then pull the sensor away from the wall.

    • 5

Disconnect the oven sensor's wire connector from the range's wire harness, and then remove the sensor.

    • 6

Set a multimeter to the lowest setting to measure ohms of resistance, and then calibrate the meter. Follow the owner's manual for the multimeter for instructions specific to your model.

    • 7

Touch one of the terminals on the oven sensor with one of the multimeter prongs. Touch the other terminal with the other prong.

    • 8

Look at the display on the multimeter with both prongs touching the terminals. If the meter shows a resistance between 1,000 and 1,100 ohms, the sensor is properly functioning. If the meter displays any other resistance, you must replace the oven sensor.
