The shade of paper you use should create a colorful glow.

One way to cast a romantic glow on the tables at your wedding reception is with a table luminary. When you have enough table luminaries, you may not even need to provide any other lighting options, because the luminaries will light up the tables so that guests can see their food, beverages and one another. If you are trying to save on the cost of lighting or wish to create something customized to your wedding, make the wedding table luminaries yourself.

Instructions

  1. White Paper Luminary

    • 1

Draw a design of the monogram you want to make for the paper luminaries on tracing paper with a pencil. Cut out the design so that you end up with a stencil. You might choose a monogram of the groom's last initial, or the first initials of the bride and groom. Or, you can create a design that is unrelated to a letter.

    • 2

Place the stencil over the white paper lunch bag and trace it onto the bag with the pencil. Use a craft knife to carve out the monogram from the bag.

    • 3

Open the bag and set it upright. Place a battery-operated tea light candle on the inside and turn it on. See how the light glows through the bag, illuminating the monogram.

    Rice Paper Luminary

    • 4

Use a ruler to measure a 1-foot by 1-foot square on the piece of cardboard. Cut out the square with a utility knife. Paint the front and back sides of the cardboard square with the white acrylic paint.

    • 5

Cut the bamboo sticks with the utility knife to 1 foot in length. Smooth the bamboo sticks down with a fine-grit sandpaper. Remove any rough edges or ends so that the wood does not splinter.

    • 6

Paint the bamboo sticks with the white acrylic paint and allow to dry for one hour.

    • 7

Set some glue on the four corners of the cardboard. Place the bamboo sticks onto the glue, pressing them firmly together. Make a strong connection and do not let go until the bamboo stick is able to stand up on its own in the glue.

    • 8

Measure and cut out the rice paper so that it fits between the bamboo stick sections. You will need four pieces of rice paper to cover the four sides of the luminary.

    • 9

Apply glue along the length of the bamboo sticks and set the rice paper in between, so that the rice paper becomes fastened to the sticks on both sides. Once the rice paper is dry, add the battery-operated tea light candle inside the luminary.
