Fabric stiffener is a craft tool that's used to strengthen such delicate materials as doilies and lace. To apply it, pour the stiffener in a plastic bag or bowl, dunk the fabric in the liquid, remove it and squeeze the fabric to wring out any excess paste. Instead of buying stiffener, make it yourself with white glue and water.

Things You'll Need

  • White glue
  • Measuring cup
  • Medium-sized bowl
  • Water
  • Spoon

Step 1

Measure one-third of a cup of white glue with a measuring cup and pour the glue into a medium-sized bowl.

Step 2

Add one cup of water to the bowl.

Step 3

Mix the glue and the water thoroughly with a spoon until it forms a paste. Use the fabric stiffener immediately.

Tip

  • If you prefer the stiffener to be thicker, add one or two more tablespoons of glue to the solution. If you want thinner stiffener, add one or two more tablespoons of water.
