Lederhosen originated in the Bavarian and Austrian countryside.

Making paper lederhosen is a great craft project for any home or classroom -- particularly if you need an activity or decoration to display and highlight your Oktoberfest celebration. Traditional lederhosen are made of leather and are short pants. Lederhosen were the traditional attire of Bavarian and Austrian woodsmen and country folk. Although not usually worn today, some countrymen adorn lederhosen to entice tourists and to show pride in their Alpine lineage.

Instructions

    • 1

Trace or draw a pair of shorts on a sheet of color paper.

    • 2

Cut out the pair of shorts. Set aside.

    • 3

Cut two long strips and one short strip out of a separate piece of paper.

    • 4

Glue the short strip of paper in between the two long strips in an “H” formation to form your suspenders.

    • 5

Glue the suspenders to the shorts.

    • 6

Cut two ovals out of contrasting color paper. One oval should be slightly smaller than the other. This will serve as a cummerbund type embellishment.

    • 7

Glue the smaller oval to the top of the larger one. Glue the larger oval onto the front of the shorts.

    • 8

Decorate the cummerbund and suspender straps with markers.
