How to Add Patina to a Metal Costume

How to Add Patina to a Metal Costume thumbnail
Metal costumes can be aged relatively easily.

Adding patina to metal, whether it be an antique or a costume, is simply a matter of introducing different elements to the metal that will accelerate the discoloration of the metal or approximate the appearance of age. A wide range of ways exist to add patina to metal, but by far the easiest is to use a simple propane torch, which can add coloration to the costume in blues and oranges.

Things You'll Need

  • Wax and grease remover
  • Clean rags
  • Propane torch

Instructions

    • 1

Remove any cloth or plastic parts from the metal costume that may be burned when coming into contact with the propane flame.

    • 2

Apply wax and grease remover to a clean rag, and then carefully and completely wipe the surface of the metal costume. This removes any protective surface that may be on the metal which could potentially catch on fire.

    • 3

Place the metal part of the costume on a concrete surface away from any flammable materials. A driveway is ideal.

    • 4

Turn on the propane torch and use it to heat the metal costume. You will be able to see the color of the metal change as it heats up. It will progress from blue to red to orange to yellow. If you allow it to progress beyond orange, the metal will cool to a black color. Blues and reds, and sometimes oranges, depending on the type of metal being heated, will remain apparent in the metal.

Tips & Warnings

  • Avoid using cream polishes on the costume to clean it. This will remove the patina. Instead, use clean water and soap, rinse it, and then allow it to dry completely before storage.

  • Wear thick nonflammable gloves and a protective mask when using a propane torch. Also avoid wearing flammable clothing.
