Instructions

    • 1

Mix 1/2 cup of cornstarch and 1/2 cup of backing soda in a medium-sized bowl and stir thoroughly to remove any clumps.

    • 2

Add 10 to 15 drops of lemon essential oil into the powder mixture and stir together in the same bowl. Because lemon consists of 5 to 6 percent citric acid, the acid actually neutralizes odors, while the citrus scents provides a pleasant air freshener.

    • 3

Pour 4 to 5 tablespoons of the mixture into a large coffee filter – the bigger the filter, the better, because the larger the bag of mixture, the more deodorizing it will be.

    • 4

Gather the top of the full coffee filter and twist the top completely closed.

    • 5

Secure the top of the filter with a twist tie to keep any of the mixture from spilling out.

    • 6

Place a bag into each shoe and leave in your closet for at least four hours to remove the unwanted odor.

Tips & Warnings

  • Replace lemon with other essential oils, such as sage, lavender, rosemary, peppermint or tea tree.

  • Use kitty litter instead of baking soda and cornstarch if you do not have them.

  • Tube socks can be used instead of coffee filters. Just sew the ends closed with a needle and thread.

  • Sprinkle any extra citrus deodorizer mixture directly into your shoes and leave overnight, shaking the powder out in the morning before wearing the shoes.

  • Discontinue use if an allergic reaction occurs.
