Make a cupcake stand for a bridal shower.

Make a cupcake stand for a bridal shower that will not only display the goodies, but will also become a part of the decorations. Simple to assemble from cardboard cake rounds and heavy cardboard, your cupcake stand will be a blank canvas you can decorate in wedding colors or a design that carries out a shower theme. Make as many tiers as you need, and add an extra one on top to hold silk flowers or other, lightweight, decorative items.

Things You'll Need

  • Heavy white cardboard
  • Scissors
  • Hot glue gun
  • Cardboard cake rounds, 8-inch, 10-inch and 12-inch diameter
  • Measuring tape
  • Card stock in wedding colors
  • Decorative edge scissors
  • 1/2-inch ribbon and ribbon roses in wedding colors

Instructions

    • 1

Cut two pieces of heavy white cardboard measuring 4 inches by 8 inches, two pieces measuring 4 inches by 6 inches and two pieces measuring 4 inches by 4 inches, using scissors.

    • 2

Cut a 3-inch slit in the center of one piece of cardboard in each size.

    • 3

Hold two cardboard pieces of the same size at right angles. Slide the center slit in one piece of cardboard over the center of the second piece of cardboard and glue it in place. Assemble all three sizes this way. You'll then have three cross-shaped assemblies.

    • 4

Lay the smallest cardboard cake round flat on a table. Put the smallest assembly in the middle of the round and glue it in place. Repeat with the remaining two assemblies and cake rounds.

    • 5

Set the largest assembly on its cross-shaped base with the cake round on top. Put hot glue on the bottom of the medium-sized cross-shaped base and set it in the center of the large cake round. Press it into place. Glue the smallest assembly to the medium-size cake round in the same way.

    • 6

Measure the circumference of each cake round and add 2 inches.

    • 7

Cut 2-inch wide strips of edging from card stock using plain scissors. Make three longer strips that equal the circumference measurements by overlapping the ends of the strips about 1/4 inch, gluing them together and cutting them to the correct length.

    • 8

Cut along one edge of each strip with decorative-edge scissors.

    • 9

Glue 1/2-inch ribbon along the straight edge of each strip, then glue ribbon roses along the decorative edge at intervals.

    • 10

Glue the straight edge of each edging strip to the side of each cake round. Join the ends by overlapping them and gluing them together.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use any decorative element you like for the edging in place of ribbon and ribbon roses. Using materials such as lace trim, sea shells, charms, buttons, or diamond mesh ribbon will individualize your cupcake stand. Make an elegant monochrome cupcake stand with one color in varying shades of card stock, ribbon and decorations, or create a fun design with contrasting colors and unexpected prints, patterns and decorations. Your cupcake stand will hold about 36 cupcakes. To make a larger stand, make additional tiers using larger cake rounds. Cut two cardboard base strips for each round, measuring 4 inches wide by the diameter size, less 2 inches.

  • You can place a small, single-layer cake on the top cake round, but don't put anything heavier on the top.
