How to Give Guitar Lessons
Giving guitar lessons can be a satisfying and lucrative way to share your skills and expertise with others who want to learn to play. You don't necessarily need a music degree to effectively teach guitar lessons. Students want guitar lessons for a variety of reasons, such as learning a new instrument, practicing rusty skills or advancing their skills. If you want to give guitar lessons, you can do so with planning and dedication.

Teaching Guitar
-
1
Base your lessons on your background and experience in various types of guitar -- electric, bass or acoustic. Teach in those areas where you are most proficient; if you are proficient in all areas, utilize your talents and offer separate lessons on each type of guitar.
-
2
Talk with potential students about their previous musical experience and abilities. Some students will be beginners, while others are looking to sharpen their skills. Shape your curriculum with the goals of each student in mind. Arrange your lessons individually or by group. If you are arranging by group, place the students in each group according to skill level and musical goals.

3
Construct a musical curriculum for your students based on their skill levels and musical ambitions. Distribute books or other materials on music appreciation, music theory and music history. Teach music theory as well as basic chords, tabs and scales to beginning students and allow them as many lessons as they need to master the basic skills. Create an individualized lesson plan for each student so she will know what is expected.
-
4
Keep track of each student's progress and setbacks during each lesson, as this will help you determine which parts of the curriculum work and which areas need improvement. Handle each student individually and with patience, as everyone learns guitar at a different rate. Some students may require extra attention and practice to master certain techniques, while others will learn them easily. Provide specialized attention to those students who need extra help, but don't forget to encourage those who are doing well.

Set goals for students to inspire them. Plan a recital at a charity event or a school in which your students can show off their newly acquired skills. Incentives and having something to work toward will help keep your students on track and motivated, and will also give them the chance to display their newly acquired skills and let others hear the music they have been working on and practicing.
