Amigurumi dolls are cute creatures that are crocheted with yarn.

Amigurumi dolls are a trend that is thought to originate in Japan. Amigurumi dolls are small, crocheted, and are known for their cuteness, spherical heads and happy, silly expressions. Recently, it has become popular in North America to crochet amigurumi dolls. They are often quite simple to crochet because of their simple appearances. Instructions

  1. Body Parts

    • 1

Chain five to ten stitches in color B, depending on the thickness of your yarn. Tie the yarn off, and coil the chain into a spiral. Repeat with another spiral. These will be the eyes, which you will sew onto the body and embroider with black pupils.

    • 2

Crochet two circles in color B, each with three to four rounds, depending on the thickness of your yarn. These will be the feet and will be sewn flat against the bottom of the body.

    • 3

Crochet a small half sphere by making a tiny circle and crocheting around it, making increases periodically every row. Increase less frequently with each row until you have made a dome shape. Make two domes. These are the arms and will be sewn with the flat sides against each side of the body.

    Body

    • 4

Make two chains, and crochet five stitches into the chain farthest from the hook. Join the circle with a slip stitch. Crochet around the circle with two single crochets in each of the stitches in the round.

    • 5

Continue crocheting around the circle. Crochet one single crochet, then two single crochets in the next stitch, and repeat around the row. With each round, increase the number of single crochet stitches between the two single crochet stitches, until you've made a row where you make two single crochets every fifth stitch.

    • 6

Single crochet around the circle for two rows. Continue the pattern in the next row, making five single crochet stitches and then making two single crochets in one stitch, and repeating.

    • 7

Single crochet in each stitch around for the next 10 rows. Sew the embellishments onto their proper location on the sphere. Stuff the open sphere with filler.

    • 8

Resume crocheting around the circle -- single crochet for five stitches, and decrease on the sixth. In the next row, single crochet all the way around. Alternate a single crochet and a decrease all the way around in the remaining rows, until the sphere is closed.

Tips & Warnings

  • Add embellishments to make your amirugumi doll specific to a creature or personality. Use items such as felt, string and beads.

  • As an alternative to filler, you can stuff the body with a sachet bag full of sweet-smelling potpourri.
