Wrap your baby in extra love with a knitted blanket with a crocheted border.

A crocheted edging adds a finished look to a baby blanket. You can crochet directly onto the blanket to give it a lacy border and the effect is simple to create but stunning to look at. The blanket will have that extra special something when you crochet a border onto it, and it is sure to become an heirloom gift for your baby.

Instructions

    • 1

Insert your crochet hook into one corner of the blanket. Pull your working yarn through the stitch, then yarn over (pull the yarn up and around the hook from back to front) and pull up a loop to connect the hook and yarn to the blanket.

    • 2

Make one chain stitch by yarning over and catching the yarn in the hook, then pulling the yarn through the loop on the hook.

    • 3

Make one single crochet stitch in the edge of the blanket by inserting your hook into the blanket's edge, as close to the edge as possible. Yarn over and draw up a loop, then yarn over and draw through both loops on the hook.

    • 4

Repeat step three across the side of the blanket, working from right to left. Space your single crochet stitches as evenly as you can down the side of the blanket.

    • 5

Work two extra single crochet stitches when you come to the next corner, for a total of three single crochet stitches in that corner. This will help you turn your work and go down the next adjacent side.

    • 6

Continue to make single crochet stitches down each subsequent side of the blanket, working three stitches in every corner. Stop when you reach your starting point.

    • 7

Create a picot edging to your blanket. Insert your crochet hook into your first single crochet edging stitch and make a slip stitch. To do this, insert the hook, yarn over and draw through the stitch and the loop on the hook at the same time. Make three chain stitches, then create another slip stitch in that same stitch.

    • 8

Repeat step seven in every single crochet stitch around the edge of the blanket.

    • 9

Make one final slip stitch in your original stitch to close the edging. Cut the working yarn, leaving a five-inch tail. Pull that tail all the way through the last stitch to secure it, then thread it onto an embroidery needle. Weave the yarn tail in and out of the stitches on the blanket to hide it. Repeat this with any remaining yarn tails.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use a crochet hook that has a similar diameter to the knitting needles you used to make the blanket.

  • Use the same yarn you used for the blanket or a different yarn with a coordinating color but the same weight and fiber material content.
