You can access thousands of public domain books on your Nook.

Using a Nook Color e-book reader gives you access to thousands of public domain books in addition to the digital editions you can buy and download through your Barnes and Noble Nook account. Once you’ve downloaded public domain e-books to your computer, you can transfer them to your Nook by connecting the device to the computer using the included data cable. The Nook is compatible with most public domain e-book formats, including PDF documents and plain text files.

Instructions

      Plug one end of the USB cable supplied with your Nook into the device. Connect the other end of the cable to an open USB port on your computer.

      Click the Windows “Start” button on your desktop taskbar. Select “Computer” from the Start menu. The Computer window opens with a list of all drives and attached devices.

      Find the “MyNOOKColor” or “MyNOOK” icon in the list of drives and devices.

      Click the desktop “Start” button again and go to the folder in which you've saved the downloaded e-books on your computer. On most computers, this is the default “Downloads” or “Documents” library folder.

      Select the public domain e-books that you want to transfer to the Nook. Drag them from the folder and drop them onto the Nook icon in the Computer window. The e-books are copied to the Nook.

      Double-click the “MyNOOKColor” or “MyNOOK” icon to open the device’s folder. Organize the transferred e-book files by dragging and dropping them into the preferred Nook folder; for example, drag e-books to the “Books” folder and downloaded documents to the “Documents” folder. Close the folder when you’ve organized your files.

      Right-click the “MyNOOKColor” or “MyNOOK” icon in the Computer window, and then click “Eject” in the context menu. Unplug the USB data cable from your computer and the Nook.

Tips & Warnings

  • Some Windows computers will display a prompt asking if you want to download a new driver when you connect the Nook. The driver download isn’t required, so click the “Cancel” button in the dialogue box.
