Whether it’s a piece of wood furniture or a small cardboard box in a distinctive shape, making a glossy decoupage on the surface transforms it from something ordinary to something full of life and color. Decoupage involves pasting a paper object to a surface and sealing it with a layer of glue or varnish. You don’t need to be a crafting expert to make a glossy decoupage. Instructions

    • 1

Select the object where you’ll be applying the decoupage. Metal, wood, cardboard, plastic or any other hard surface will work. Clean the object’s surface so it’s free from dirt or dust.

    • 2

Plan the layout of your paper objects. Cut out multiple pictures or patterns from the paper and lay them out on the object’s surface like a collage or stick to one or two strategically placed items.

    • 3

Fill a spray bottle with a fine mist attachment with water. Spray lightly over the paper pieces to moisten them.

    • 4

Use a foam brush to coat the back of the paper pieces with decoupage glue. Press the paper onto the surface. Let it dry overnight.

    • 5

Brush a layer of decoupage glue or clear varnish on top of the paper objects. Both will dry to achieve a glossy look, but you may see brush strokes if using decoupage glue. Allow it to dry for several hours before handling.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can decoupage any type of paper object to a surface. Get creative and draw your own pictures or cut ones out of newspapers or magazines. Print images from your computer, cut out shapes from construction paper or rip pieces of tissue paper into small bits. There are numerous possibilities, so let your creativity serve as a guide.
