Learn how to make a layred fabric necklace from an old T-shirt.

If you have some old T-shirts in your closet that you no longer want to wear, but you like the colors of the fabric, turn them into necklaces. The necklaces you can make out of a T-shirt will have a layered look, with many "cords" that hang around your neck as a single necklace. Since the necklace is made from fabric, it is easily embellished with pins or brooches. Follow a basic method that doesn't involve any sewing or gluing.

Instructions

    • 1

Spread a T-shirt out on your work area with the front facing up. Use a size large if you want a long necklace. A medium or small T-shirt will also work, but will create a different length.

    • 2

Cut off the bottom seam of the T-shirt and discard it. Measure and cut 1-inch-wide strips horizontally across the width of the shirt, through the front and back, until you get to the arm pits. These strips look like flat round loops.

    • 3

Stretch the loop strips gently until the edges curl together and take on a round shape that resembles a thick cord. Pile the curled loops neatly on top of each other with the sides aligned.

    • 4

Take one of the loops from the pile and fold it in half. Wrap the folded loop around one side of the stack of the loops and tie it to hold the stack together. This forms the layered necklace and holds the layers together.

    • 5

Trim the ends of the strip you used to tie the stack down to a length of 1/4 inch. Turn the stack over to hide the ends -- the side now facing up is the side that faces up while you are wearing it.

    • 6

Pin a decorative brooch to the top of the fabric holding the rest of the layers together to embellish the necklace. Alternatively, add decorative lapel pins to various points on the layers.
