Instructions

  1. Pirate’s Booty Pouch

    • 1

Cut out a 9-inch diameter felt circle, using sharp scissors.

    • 2

Punch eight equidistant holes around the circle’s perimeter, using a hole punch. Leave about 1/4-inch of space between the holes and the edge of the circle.

    • 3

Thread one end of a piece of brown yarn through one of the holes. Hold that end in place and thread the yarn through the other holes.

    • 4

Place a few pirate-themed goodies, such as chocolate coins, temporary tattoos or fake shark's teeth in the center of the bag.

    • 5

Bring the two free ends of yarn together and pull tight to draw the pouch closed.

    Eye Patch Favors

    • 6

Draw an eye patch shape on a piece of black foam. Cut out the eye patch with sharp scissors.

    • 7

Cut a 1 1/4-inch slit vertically into the bottom of the eye patch. Overlap the edges of the slit to make the eye patch convex. Secure the overlapping edges with hot glue.

    • 8

Punch a hole on either side of the eye patch.

    • 9

Cut a piece of elastic long enough to fit snugly around your child’s head. Thread each end of the elastic through the holes in the eye patch and tie them in place.

    Treasure Map

    • 10

Draw a treasure map on a piece of paper using waterproof markers.

    • 11

Crumple up the map and submerge it into a cup of strong tea for at least five minutes.

    • 12

Straighten out the map and tear off the edges while the paper is still wet. You now have an aged, distressed treasure map.

    Pirate Cupcakes

    • 13

Make the birthday child's favorite cupcake recipe.

    • 14

Ice the cupcakes as usual with black or brown icing.

    • 15

Pipe a skull and crossbones on top of each cupcake, using white icing.

    “Bloody” Soda

    • 16

Freeze red juice, such as cranberry juice, fruit punch or cherry juice, in ice cube trays.

    • 17

Pour glasses of lemon-lime soda or lemonade for each child.

    • 18

Serve the glasses with several, red ice cubes. When the ice melts, the drinks will look like blood in water, as if from a shark attack.

Tips & Warnings

  • Indicate party favor locations on your treasure map and have kids go on a scavenger hunt to find party favors.

  • Choose age-appropriate favors for your booty pouches. Young children can choke on small objects.
