How to Remove Squirrel Nests From Gutters
Although squirrels are amusing to observe in their natural habitat, these small animals are detrimental to buildings. Squirrels gnaw on electrical wiring and tear out insulation. In fact, squirrels will create nests within building gutters, blocking water flow and adding damaging weight to the gutter's assembly. Gutters are appealing to squirrels, providing a safe place from predators for sleeping and protecting newborns. However, a building owner can remove the nest and prevent new squirrels from creating one in the future. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Place a tube trap at the gutter's exit point. The exit point is typically a pipe that meets the ground for allowing drainage water to flow to a municipal sewage system.
-
2
Check the tube trap at the end of the day for a trapped squirrel. Squirrels need to exit the nesting area for food and water. Commonly, squirrels will use the gutter system as a means of exiting and entering the nest.

3
Access the nest by climbing a ladder to the gutter area. Do not attempt to access the nest until the squirrel is safely caught. Squirrels can bite and injure a person.
-
4
Remove the nesting debris with a scoop shovel tool. Make sure that the tool fits within the gutter's width. Place the debris into a trash bag.
-
5
Visually verify that the gutter is clear. Check for any other nests along the gutter.
-
6
Install metal mesh across the gutter's entire top opening. Include mesh across any pipe openings. This will prevent another squirrel nest from occurring, as well as hindering debris build-up from falling leaves.

Tips & Warnings
Flush small debris, such as dust, from the gutter system with a water hose. This will clear the gutter system for the rainy months ahead.
Use caution while accessing the nest. Rain gutters can be installed on second- or third-story building levels, requiring a long ladder climb. Ask a friend to hold the ladder's base, especially if the gutter is extremely high.
