How Should You Write Your Salary Expectations in an Email?

It's hard to talk about money, especially if a potential employer has put you on the spot. You know what you're hoping to get for your new job, but you don't want to sound greedy and you don't want to be rejected for the position by asking too much. However, when it comes to your employment, it's best to start off by stating your expectations, if asked, because if you don't, you may end up working for much less than you planned.

Instructions

    • 1

Format your email as you would a standard business letter. Include your full contact information at the top, including your name, address, phone number and email address. Include full contact information for the person to whom you are writing several spaces below it. Address the email appropriately, writing, "Dear Mr. Smith."

    • 2

Write out some of the work and educational experience that is most appropriate to the job for which you are applying. For example, write that you were recently, "responsible for supervising the training of all employees on the computer network." Include other responsibilities such as organization and projects you led.

    • 3

State your previous salary, if that is what you want to make at this job, or state similar salaries for the same job at other firms. For example, if you previously made $50,000 a year at your job and want to make that again, you can say something like, "for this reason, I earned a salary of $50,000 a year at the XYZ firm."

Find statistics that support your expectations. If you want to make a different salary than your current one, find statistical information to back up your claim. If you receive a job offer, say "after researching the offered position in similar markets around the country, I believe that $65,500 is a reasonable salary for the responsibilities and duties required." You can then cite your resources for your claim.

Close your letter with gratitude for being considered for the position as well as your stated eagerness and enthusiasm for getting started right away.
