How to Calculate How Much Binding Fabric Is Needed for a Quilt

Binding on a quilt has both practical and creative uses. Binding holds the pieces of fabric together and creates a cohesive border along the quilt. Binding also can be used to accent the quilt and, depending on the color that is used, can tie the entire quilt together. Getting the correct measurement for binding may be a bit tricky at first, but with a little time and patience, the calculation can become second nature.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the four sides of the quilt with a tape measure. Add the measurements together.

    • 2

Add 20 inches to the measurement that you found in Step 1 for seams and starts and finishes of the binding.

    • 3

Multiply 2.25 for the width to the sum found in Step 2. With a calculator, find the square root of the calculation, and round up to the nearest inch. This amount is the size in square inches of the piece you need to cut your binding.
