Handmade TV Stands

Building your own handmade TV stand is ensures a well-coordinated television setup. By custom designing your TV stand, you can tailor this piece of furniture to fit your room exactly. You can easily alter its dimensions to fit any size screen, and to fit and store any amount of related video devices underneath. Picking a specific wood type, paint color or wood stain enables you to perfectly match your new piece to the rest of your living room or bedroom decor.

Things You'll Need

• 2 side boards, 2 by 1 feet by 1 inch
• 2 support boards, 2 feet by 2 inch by 1/2 inch
• 2 surface boards, 3 by 2 feet by 1 inch
• Drill
• Drill bit
• 1-inch wood screws
• 2-inch wood screws
• 4 side table or couch legs

Instructions

1. Position one of the 2-by-1 side boards horizontally on the working surface with the long, thin side touching the surface. Place one of the 2-by-2 support boards parallel to the first board and on top of it, with the long, wide surface touching the first board. Arrange the boards so the long edge of the support board is flush with the edge of the side board and the two boards form a smooth L shape.

2. Predrill four evenly spaced holes down through the top of the support board and into the side board, so that the holes are directly in the center of the side boards. Secure the boards together using the 1-inch wood screws drilled through the predrilled holes. Repeat the previous steps for the other side and support boards.

3. Arrange the two sides on the top of one of the surface boards, with the outer sides of the side boards flush with the outside edge of the surface board’s 2-foot sides. Ensure that the section of the side board with the support board attached is touching the surface board and that the support board is facing inward. Predrill four evenly spaced holes through the center of each of the exposed support boards and into the surface board.

4. Set the legs in the four corners of one of the 3-by-2-foot surface boards. Mark the location of their screw attachments according to their specific bracket holes. Predrill the holes in the marked locations, then attach the legs to the corners using the included hardware or 1-inch wood screws.

5. Place the bottom assembled surface board on top of the assembled side boards. Line the outer edge of the side boards up with the outer edge of the bottom surface board and predrill four evenly spaced holes down through the bottom surface board and into the center of the side boards. Drill a 2-inch wood screw down through each predrilled hole and into the side board.

Tips & Warnings

• Adjust dimensions for larger televisions or more storage underneath. Add more shelves beneath the main television surface by simply adding on further ½-inch boards separated by side boards.

• Paint or stain the stand to fit the decor of the room, preferably prior to assembly for the most consistent overall appearance.

• You can attach various couch or small end table legs, or you can build legs using 1-by-1-inch boards or 1-by-2-inch boards.

• While the back of this TV stand is left open for ease of cable management, you can cover the rear if desired with a thin piece of wood or fabric providing a hole is left for the cords to enter and exit each compartment.

• Do not use this television stand as a stool as it is not designed to support the weight of a person.
