How to Label Your Crochet

Sew labels to your crocheted items.

After going through all the time and trouble of crocheting an item, either for yourself or as a gift, attach a care label so you know how to clean it. If you have used a specialty yarn, such as cashmere, silk or mohair to make a sweater or scarf, cleaning it using the wrong method or exposing it to the high temperatures of a dryer or iron can ruin all the hours of work you put into making it. After you have labels, writing the instructions allows you to quickly finish the project and stitch the label to the item.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Buy a package of blank care labels at a craft store.

    • 2

Write down the care instructions for the crocheted item on one label, using the indelible marker. Use a second marker and write down your name and the name of the person to whom you are giving the item.

    • 3

Sew the labels to the items, using a sewing needle and sewing thread. Alternatively, you can sew the labels, using a sewing machine.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can also use a dryer sheet as a care label. Cut a portion of the dryer sheet, then write down the care instructions with the indelible marker and sew the label onto the item.

  • Do not try to attach labels with an iron – if you used a fragile yarn, you may ruin the item.
