How to Amplify Drums Without Mics
Connecting your drums to an amplifier via a microphone isn't always a desirable option when you want your drums to sound louder. Drums are percussion instruments, which means you control the volume based on how you play. If your drums are not as loud as you'd like them, you can amplify the sound with changes in how you play and your instrument surroundings.

1
Strike your drums harder, when possible. As a percussion instrument, the harder you strike, the louder the sound.
-
2
Replace your drum head. Use a different brand or style of drum head, such as those that use tonal focusing, which provides a stronger sound. Experiment with different drum heads at your local music store to discover the sound you are looking for.

3
Remove sound dampening material from the drum body and surrounding area. For example, tape and drum rings attached to your drums absorb sound energy and reduce volume. Pillows or furniture that are too close to the drum set produce a similar effect.
-
4
Play your drums in a different room or reposition them. Position the drums at least 4 feet away from walls or sound absorbing items, such as couches and beds.
