How to Make Fleece Slippers for a Toddler

Keep toddler feet warm with the use of fleece slippers.

Fleece is a versatile fabric because it does not fray and has a greater stability than felt. Fleece can be used in a variety of projects, and helps keep the wearer warm. One project that you can create from fleece is a set of soft indoor house slippers for a toddler, baby or young child. These slippers are based on the pattern for Chinese slippers that tie the slipper around the ankle, preventing them from coming off of the foot without unbuttoning the straps.

Things You'll Need

• Paper
• Pencil
• Scissors
• 1-foot-by-1-foot section of foot fleece
• Sewing machine
• Thread
• Small button

Instructions

1. Draw an oval shape around your toddler’s feet. Make the oval about 1 inch larger on all sides. Draw a second oval shape 1 inch larger than the first. Cut off the back 2 inches, leaving a half-oval shape. Cut out the patterns.

2. Cut out two of each pattern piece from fleece.

3. Cut down the center of each toe section to about 2 inches away from the rounded side. Round the line out 1 inch on either side. Cut back up the slipper to 1 inch away from the flat side of the fleece. Do not cut off the inside of the slipper top, as this will become straps to hold the slippers in place.

4. Fold the slipper top in half. Sew a quarter-inch seam along the flat side of the slipper. Repeat for the other slipper.

5. Sew the slipper sole to the top along the outside edge using a quarter-inch seam allowance.

6. Fold the two tabs together in front of the shoe. Cut a slit in one for a buttonhole. Sew a button to the other side.

7. Slide the toddler’s feet into the slippers. Wrap the tabs around the front of the toddler’s foot. Button the tabs to secure the slippers on the child’s feet.
