How to Make Constellations Using Toilet Paper Rolls

How to Make Constellations Using Toilet Paper Rolls thumbnail
May ancient civilations have their own folklore for the constellations.

Learning about constellations opens up the stories of the skies for children. In addition to learning the folklore associated with constellations, children learn how to identify them by sight. They even learn how to tell relative time of night and direction, based on where constellations are located in the sky. Spotting them, however, can be difficult for young learners. You can use an old toilet paper roll to create small versions of constellations, to help children learn to identify them -- without having to wait for a clear night sky.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut a square of aluminum large enough to fit over the end of a toilet paper roll, and hold it in place with the rubber band.

    • 2

Mark the stars of the constellation on the attached foil with a marker.

    • 3

Poke holes in the aluminum at the constellation points you marked with the marker.

    • 4

Hold your toilet paper roll constellation up to the light, and look through it to see the “stars.”

    • 5

Repeat this process with a different constellation, to build a collection.

Tips & Warnings

  • Paper towel rolls can be used in place of toilet paper rolls.

  • Because the scissors and pin are sharp, adult supervision is required.
