How to Make a Black Masquerade Mask
Although masquerade balls were much more the rage in centuries past, the masks that people wore can still be a fun part of a Halloween costume. There are as many masquerade mask designs as there are people who want to carry them, as you can apply everything from sequins to rhinestones to feathers to make a mask unlike any other.

- Tape measure
- Scrap cardboard
- Scissors
- Glue (craft, clear and glitter)
- Black material
- Decorative items, such as rhinestones or feathers
- Craft dowel

Use the tape measure to measure the distance from temple to temple, over the nose, and the distance from the bridge of your nose to the center of your forehead. This will give you the desired width and length of your mask.

Sketch out a shape with these measurements on a piece of scrap cardboard. Don't make a rectangle, though--go ahead and draw the shape that you want the mask to take. The width and length you found in Step 1 should be the longest width and length of your mask shape.

Use the scissors to cut out the shape that you drew, then put the shape over your face. Find the place where your eye holes should go by lining up your eyes with particular spots on the cardboard. Mark small circles to cut out; these should be about the size of a nickel and should go right over your eye when you put the mask back over your face.

Attach your black material to the cardboard using the craft glue. Felt is a common choice, but other fabrics will work as well. Glue the material onto both sides and use your fingers to get rid of any wrinkles and pull the fabric tight. Cut away any extra material and wait for the glue to dry. Check the glue bottle for exact drying time, but 15 minutes or so should do it.

Glue your decorative items to the front of the mask. Clear glue will work best with small items, such as faux rhinestones or small feathers. You can make swirling patterns with different colors of glitter glue. You'll also want to paint your craft dowel to match your mask and then glue it to one side--the same side as the hand you want to hold the mask with. Try the mask on for size and visibility, and make your eye holes slightly larger as needed.
