How to Knit a Short Row Garter Stitch
Short rows create a pocket in a piece of knitting. Frequently used for knitting the heels of socks, short rows are worked differently depending on whether you are working in stockinette or garter stitch. When working short rows in stockinette, you wrap each stitch once. When knitting back across the rows, you lift the wrap and knit it with the stitch. Garter stitch requires wrapping each stitch twice but does not require picking up the wraps.
Instructions

-
1
Knit all the way across the row, stopping before the last stitch.
-
2
Slip the last stitch purlwise onto the right needle.
-
-
3
Bring the working yarn to the front of your knitting. Turn your work. The working yarn will now be to the back.
-
4
Slip the last stitch onto the right needle knitwise.
-
5
Knit across to the last stitch of the row. Repeat Steps 2 through 4.
-
6
Continue repeating Steps 2 through 4, but with the next stitch in from the one you just wrapped. For example, on the second row you will wrap the next to last stitch on each end. On the third row, wrap three stitches in. On the fourth row, wrap four stitches in.
-
7
Work until you have as many stitches in between the wrapped stitches as your pattern specifies. End on a wrong-side row.
-
8
Knit the unwrapped stitches on the wrong-side row and then knit the first wrapped stitch.
-
9
Slip the next stitch after the knitted wrapped stitch as if to purl. Wrap the stitch a second time using the same technique as the first time.
-
10
Slip the stitch back to the left needle and turn.
-
11
Continue across the row, repeating Steps 8 through 10 until you come to the last stitch. Knit the last stitch, turn your work and knit across the next row as usual.
