How do I Make a Crocheted Wire Bead Bracelet?

How do I Make a Crocheted Wire Bead Bracelet? thumbnail
Metal beads will make a sturdier bracelet than glass or plastic beads.

Crochet hooks are traditionally used with yarn or thread to create blankets, sweaters, scarves and doilies. Modern jewelry makers, however, are using crochet hooks with wire to make jewelry. The result is intricate, fragile looking bracelets and necklaces that resemble filigree. You can add beads to crocheted bracelets for a more elegant look. Use silver or gold wire for a classic look, or purchase wire in a variety of colors at your local craft store.

Instructions

    • 1

Slide nine beads onto the end of your wire while it is still on the spool. Choose an assortment of beads in different sizes and shapes.

    • 2

Leave a few inches at the end of the wire and loop it to form a circle. Pull wire from the spool side through the loop to make a slip knot. Slide the loop over a steel size J crochet hook and pull the spool wire to tighten the knot.

    • 3

Loop the spool wire around the crochet hook and pull it through the slip knot to create a chain stitch. Repeat two more times leaving the stitches as loose, open loops.

    • 4

Slide the first bead against the chain stitches. Loop the wire on the other side of the bead around the crochet hook and pull through the previous loop. Add another chain stitch and slide the next bead down. Loop the wire on the other side of the second bead around the crochet hook and pull through the previous loop. Repeat until you have crocheted all the beads into the wire.

    • 5

Crochet four chain stitches after the ninth bead and pull the last chain stitch tight to form a knot. Clip the wire a few inches from the last stitch with nail clippers for a clean finish.

    • 6

Repeat the process to make two more crocheted strands.

    • 7

Hold the strands together so that the beginning of the chain stitches match up and twist the ends of the three strands together. Spread out the three crocheted strands.

    • 8

Braid the strands together loosely. Put the first strand on the right over the second strand and under the third. Take the new first strand on the right and place it over the second and under the third. Continue to braid until you reach the end of the crocheted parts of the strands.

    • 9

Twist the ends together to hold the braid in place. Create a loop on each side of the bracelet with needle-nose pliers. Slide one side of a jewelry clasp onto each loop. Twist the end of the wire around itself three times to hold each clasp in place. Trim the end neatly with nail clippers.
