How to Decoupage a Pot

How to Decoupage a Pot thumbnail
Give a terracotta pot a unique look with decoupage before planting in it.

Flower pots hold decorative flowers and plants, but there is no reason that they cannot be decorative themselves. The surface of a terracotta flower pot is an excellent choice for decoupage, and it can be used to complement a room’s theme. You may choose to decoupage a single image to the pot or you may choose to color it with a brilliant collage of images or colors using snips and scraps of colored paper.

Instructions

    • 1

Paint a terracotta pot completely with acrylic paint using a paintbrush. This is your base layer, and this is the color that shows through between the paper scraps that you glue to the pot. Even if you do not intend to have any of the base layer of the pot show through, the paint still gives the paper and glue something to cling to.

    • 2

Cut out the images and paper scraps that you want to use to cover the pot. Print out pictures of your family or simply create a crazy-quilt effect by cutting out scraps of colored paper of different sizes.

    • 3

Paint the back side of your paper scraps with decoupage medium and affix them to the pot. The decoupage medium acts like a glue, holding the paper to the pot. Overlap the papers to cover the pot completely.

    • 4

Cover the entire pot with a coat of decoupage medium, giving the surface of the pot a smooth finish.

    • 5

Wait for the pot to dry thoroughly, which can take several hours.

Tips & Warnings

  • Cover the pot with polyurethane sealer before applying the paint. This prevents water from leaching through the pot to damage the paper.
