How to Fix a Wobbly Trumpet Valve

An improperly adjusted spring or a damaged valve guide can cause a trumpet valve to wobble. A wobbly trumpet valve changes the pitch of the notes and will force the trumpet to sound out of tune. The trumpet valve can be fixed in just a few minutes.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn the top cap on the wobbly trumpet valve counterclockwise by hand to loosen the cap. Lift the cap off of the valve casing and take the spring out of the casing.

    • 2

Pull the spring until it is just a little more than an inch long. Use a tape measure to verify the length of the spring. Use a clean, dry cloth to remove any moisture from inside the valve casing.

    • 3

Check the guide at the top of the valve casing for any damage or scratches. If there is any damage to the guide, slide it out of the casing and replace the guide.

    • 4

Place the spring back in the valve casing. Attach the cap to the top of the casing. Turn the cap clockwise until the fit is tight.
