How to Crochet a Popcorn Stitch to Use in the Border for a Shawl
The crocheted popcorn stitch may be used as a single or multiple-row border for shawls and many other crocheted items. This nubby, dimensional stitch is both visually and texturally interesting. For that reason, the popcorn stitch is often used to make accent rows or borders on baby blankets. The popcorn stitch is simply a cluster of double-crochet stitches that are drawn together at the top. Gathering the stitches forms a bumpy texture that resembles popcorn when viewed from the backside of the crocheted piece.

Insert the crochet hook under both loops on any edge stitch of the shawl. Draw the yarn that you are using for the border through the stitch and tie it to the stitch. Make the beginning popcorn stitch by chaining three stitches. The three chain stitches will count as the first double crochet in the four-stitch cluster. In the same stitch, do three double crochet stitches. To double crochet, yarn over and insert the hook in the stitch from the previous row. Draw the hook through the stitch. Yarn over and draw the yarn through two loops on the hook. Yarn over and draw the yarn through the last two loops on the hook.

Remove the hook. Insert the hook from front to back through the top loop of the third chain. Pick up the dropped loop onto the hook. Pull it through the top loop of the third chain. Chain one. Skip one stitch.

Crochet the remaining popcorn stitches, using four double crochet stitches to make each cluster. Do four double crochet stitches in the same stitch. Remove the hook. Insert the hook from front to back through the top loops of the first double crochet stitch. Pick up the dropped loop onto the hook. Pull it through the top loops of the first double crochet stitch. Chain one.

Continue alternating one popcorn stitch and one chain stitch as you work along the border of the shawl. In each corner chain or stitch, crochet one popcorn stitch, chain three and one more popcorn stitch. When the shawl border is finished, tie off the end of the yarn and weave in loose threads.
