How to Do a Side Jump in Ballet

How to Do a Side Jump in Ballet thumbnail
A ballet side jump or leap requires the flexibility and control common to all balletic moves.

The side jump, also known as the side leap, is a complex ballet move in which you run forward and leap into the air, moving sideways as you extend both of your legs into a perfect horizontal split. It is a leaping side split, and is similar to the grand jeté and also to an arabesque in the air. This move requires coordination, timing and flexibility, as you cannot successfully complete it without the ability to perform the splits on the ground. You can practice your side jumps by getting the approach, leap and landing correct, then work to increase your height and leg extension over time.

Instructions

    • 1

Stand in ballet first position and prepare for the running approach.

    • 2

Take four steps, starting with your right foot.

    • 3

Do a deep plié on your fourth step, with your left foot forward. This gives you the force needed to jump.

    • 4

Leap into the air and rotate your body to the right, with your right leg extending straight out.

    • 5

Extend your left leg out to complete the split, as your right leg comes up and your body launches skyward.

    • 6

Keep your shoulders over your hips and your head centered over your body.

    • 7

Land on both feet at the same time and continue the rest of your dance.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can improve your side jump extensions by practicing side splits on the ground. The more flexible you are, the easier it is to get full extension in the air.
