How to Sew a Pirate Hat
Adults and children alike enjoy dressing up in pirate attire. Pirate costumes are one of the most popular choices for parties, trick-or-treating and for kids’ dress-up play. The most important piece of the costume is the pirate hat, which can be expensive to purchase. You can make your own pirate hat as an alternative to buying one.

1
Measure the circumference of your head with a tape measure. Hold the tape loosely so the hat won’t fit too tight. Divide the circumference by 2. Add 8 to that number to get the total length you will need for the bottom of each piece of felt.
-
2
Lay a double layer of felt on a flat surface. Set the tape measure against the bottom of the felt and use a pencil to mark the ends of the measurement you came up with in Step 1.
-
-
3
Measure 5 inches up from each mark you made at the bottom of the felt and make another mark.
-
4
Draw the shape for the top of your hat. Start at the top left mark and draw a curve over to the mark at the other side of the felt in the shape you want for the top of your hat. The top of a pirate's hat usually curves upward in the middle and slopes downward at either side.
-
5
Cut out your pirate hat pattern. You should have two pieces.
-
6
Put the two pieces together and place pins across the top of the hat to hold them in place. At the bottom of the hat, measure 4 inches toward the middle from each side edge and place a pin. The space between these two pins is where the hole for your head will be.
-
7
Sew all the way around the hat 1/4-inch from the edge. Remove the pins as you get to them. Do not sew between the two pins at the bottom of the hat.

Tips & Warnings
Use fabric paint to draw a skull and crossbones on the front of the hat. Glue on any additional trim, such as gold braid, if desired.
