How to Cite Photographs in PowerPoint

How to Cite Photographs in PowerPoint thumbnail
You should cite all copyrighted images used in your PowerPoint presentations.

PowerPoint is a presentation and slide show program from Microsoft. Common in home, business and academic environments, PowerPoint offers you a wide variety of text, image and object editing features. Because presentations created in PowerPoint are often used publicly or distributed to any number of people, it is important to cite any copyrighted material you use when creating the file, including photographs and other images.

Instructions

    • 1

Launch PowerPoint and open the presentation that contains the photograph that you want to cite. Click to the appropriate slide.

    • 2

Click the “Insert” tab and locate the Text section. Click the “Text Box” button. Click in an area of the slide where you want to add the citation and drag the text box to the desired size, while holding down the mouse button.

    • 3

Type the photographer’s name, the title of the photograph, where the photograph was found and the date the photograph was taken. Each piece of information should be separated by a period and a space. A citation might look like "Doe, Jane. Random Image. Photos.com. January 1, 2011." Use “Unknown” for any information you do not have, such as "Unknown Photographer. Unknown Title. Photos.com. Unknown Date."

    • 4

Highlight the text in the text box. Change the font size so that it is readable, without disrupting the slide’s content (for example, a 6-point font). Click the edge of the text box and drag it to the bottom of the slide.
