Small pom poms are a smaller version of cheerleader poms.

Poms, or pom-poms, are fluffy balls of yarn typically seen as bobbles at the top of winter hats. However, poms can be made out of just about any material, including lace, and can be used for things such as the ends of drapery ties, tablecloth corners and so much more. With just a few tools and few steps, you can make your own lace poms to decorate a variety of things.

Instructions

    • 1

Find a round glass or other object that is close to the size you want to make your pom. Trace the round object onto the cardboard making a circle. Repeat this on another piece of cardboard so you have two circles traced out. Cut out each of these circles. Inside the cut out cardboard circles, draw a smaller circle. Cut this circle out on both pieces of the cardboard while also cutting out a small opening. The result will resemble the letter “C.”

    • 2

Cut a piece of your ribbon about 12 inches in length. Place the ribbon in between the two pieces of cardboard, following the “C” pattern, with the ends coming out at the bottom. This will be the ribbon to tie your pom together.

    • 3

Cut out your lace material so that it is in long strips. Hold your cardboard template in your hand so that the opening of the “C” is at the bottom. With your first piece of lace, begin wrapping around the template starting at the top in the middle of the “C.” Wrap around the cardboard going towards your right until you reach the end, and then wrap back toward the center. Continue to the left side, wrap in the same manner and return to the middle. The more lace material you wrap, the denser your pom will be.

    • 4

Grab the ends of the ribbon and make a loose slipknot. Slip your scissors between the two pieces of cardboard. Cut the lace around the edges of the circle. Once you have completed the cutting, tighten the slipknot in order to hold the lace together. Make another knot to make sure it does not come apart, and then pull away your cardboard template.

    • 5

Grab the ribbon and give your pom a shake. This will open up the layers of the lace and fluff up your pom ball. With your scissors, trim any uneven sections of your pom to make an even circle.

Tips & Warnings

  • Experiment with different textures of lace to create different types of poms. Mixing other colors of lace can give depth and variety to your poms.

  • Keep your cardboard templates for use when making other poms. You can create a variety of different sizes for different sized poms.
