How to Request a Change in Job Title
Many companies attach titles to employees, such as Accountant II or IT Technician. If you’re an classified as an Accountant II and perform the duties of an Accountant IV, your title should reflect the tasks you complete on a daily basis and the responsibilities you undertake. Companies that grant title changes usually do so through human resources. As long as you provide a compelling case for the title change, the company will typically comply with your wishes.

1
Review your job duties and compare them to the duties of the job title you’re requesting. Make sure that the duties are comparable.
-
2
Approach your supervisor. Ask him about the company’s policy on title changes. Some companies simply do not grant title changes. Companies that do permit title changes typically require you to fill out paperwork.

-
3
Fill out the title change request paperwork in its entirety. The request form will likely ask you to list why you qualify for a new title. Include the duties you currently perform and how they match up to those of the job title you’re requesting.
-
4
Specify whether you’re looking for a pay increase. Some title change request forms also include a section about your salary. If you believe you deserve a higher salary to match your new title, include strong evidence to support your case. Talk about your level of performance, your accomplishments, the skills you bring to the table and how you will continue to improve.
-
5
Interview with your supervisor or human resources. If you only requested a new title, you likely won’t interview with anyone. The company will simply approve or deny your title request. If you requested a higher salary to go along with your new title, you may have to interview with a supervisor or human resources. Approach the interview as if you were interviewing for a new job. Dress professionally, bring an updated copy of your resume and provide thorough answers that show why you deserve a higher salary.
