How to Become a Licensed Land Surveyor in Texas
Land surveyors measure and map the land. To regulate the quality of work provided by surveyors, each U.S. state has its own licensing board. In Texas, the relevant authority is the Texas Board of Professional Land Surveying. Surveyors who meet the required standards are provided with a professional license to operate in the state. The Board issues a list of licensed and registered surveyors.

Obtain a bachelor’s degree from an accredited educational establishment. Colleges and universities that offer land surveying degrees and related courses include Austin, Dallas and Houston community colleges, as well as the universities of Houston and Tyler.

Contact the Texas Board of Professional Land Surveying and arrange to take the Fundamentals of Land Surveying exam in either April or October. Register online with the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (ncees.org) and reserve a seat for the exam.

Prepare for the eight-hour exam by purchasing a copy of the NCEES Principles and Practices of Surveying Sample Questions and Solutions from the NCEES website. Subjects will include survey calculations, algebra, trigonometry, land development principles and field data acquisition.

Arrive at the exam site on the designated date and present the exam authorization notice and a valid form of photo ID. After completing the exam, it takes between eight and 10 weeks to receive the results. By passing the exam, candidates are entitled to become registered professional land surveyors or to receive their license as a licensed state land surveyor.
