You can configure a Cisco PIX appliance to support a Graphical User Interface or GUI if you are not comfortable with the Cisco CLI or Command Line Interface. The Cisco Adaptive Security Device Manager or ASDM is Web server software that provides Cisco PIX status and configuration access through a Web browser interface. Use the Cisco CLI for installing and configuring PIX ASDM functionality to simplify Cisco PIX management.

  • Windows 7 computer with a 9 pin “D” style serial port and the PuTTY program installed
  • Cisco serial console cable
  • Cisco PIX Privileged Exec password
  • Cisco ASDM image stored on a network TFTP server
  • IP address of the network TFTP server
  • ASDM image file name

Instructions

      Plug the Cisco PIX “D” style serial cable connector into the Windows computer serial port. Connect the other end of the serial cable into the Cisco PIX “Console” port.

      Click the Windows orb on the computer desktop task bar. Type “cmd” in the Search box and tap “Enter.”

      Type “ipconfig /all” on the command line and press “Enter.” Note the gateway IP address and subnet mask displayed in the command line output.

      Click the Windows orb on the desktop task bar. Write “putty.exe” into the Search box and press “Enter.”

      Click the “Serial” item in the “PuTTY Configuration” window left pane. Type the name of the serial COM port connected to the Cisco PIX into the “Serial line to connect to” box.

      Click the “Flow control” drop-down box and click the “None” option. Click the “Open” button. Press the “Enter” key three times.

      Type “enable” on the command line and press “Enter.” Enter the Privileged Exec password if prompted and press “Enter.”

      Type “copy tftp flash” at the command prompt and press “Enter.” Write the IP address of the TFTP server that holds the ASDM image file when prompted and tap “Enter.”

      Write the ASDM image file name when prompted and press “Enter.” Tap “Enter” when the “Destination file name” prompt appears.

      Enter “show interfaces” at the command line and press “Enter.” View the command line output and note the interface name associated with the Windows gateway IP address.

      Enter “config term” on the command line and tap “Enter.”

      Type “interface fa 0/1” at the command prompt. Replace “fa 0/1” with the interface name noted in the “show interfaces” output. Tap the “Enter” key.

      Enter “nameif inside” and tap “Enter.” Type “exit” and press “Enter.”

      Type “asdm image flash:asdm.bin” on the command line. Replace “asdm.bin” with the ASDM image file name and tap “Enter.”

      Write “http server enable” at the command prompt and press “Enter.” Enter “http 0 0 inside” on the command line and touch the “Enter” key. Type “exit” on the command line and tap “Enter.”

      Type “show running http” on the command line and press “Enter.” Verify that the command line output displays “http server enabled.” Confirm that the line “http x.x.x.x a.b.c.d inside” is displayed with the Windows gateway IP address and subnet mask rather than “x.x.x.x a.b.c.d.”

      Enter “copy run start” at the command prompt and press “Enter” to save the configuration.
