How to Edit Your Avatar in Facebook

Personalize your Facebook profile by creating an avatar out of your favorite photo.

Facebook is a social media website that allows you to create a personal profile that you can use to connect to other users and create your own social network on the site. You can share images with your Facebook friends, and you can choose your favorite image of yourself as a profile photo. Facebook resizes your profile photo into an avatar that represents you in all your activities and comments. You can easily edit and change your Facebook avatar at any time, either by editing your current profile photo or by uploading a new one.

Instructions

1. Log in to your Facebook account, and click your name in the upper left column to navigate to your profile page.

2. Hover your mouse over your current avatar in the upper left corner of your profile. Click on the "Change Picture" link that appears.

3. Click the "Edit Thumbnail" link under your current avatar to use the same image cropped differently for a new avatar. Facebook creates a square avatar out of your profile image. Drag the image around with your mouse in the editing window until you see the portion of the image you want to use as the avatar; then click the blue "Save" button to save your changes.

4. Upload a new image to use as a Facebook avatar by clicking the "Browse" button. Browse the contents of your hard drive until you find the image you wish to use. Double-click the image to automatically begin uploading it to Facebook. Edit the way the avatar looks by clicking the "Edit Thumbnail" link under the new image and dragging the image around with the mouse in the window until it looks the way you want it to. Click the "Save" button when you're done.

5. Take a new avatar photograph with your computer's Webcam by clicking the "Take a Picture" button and following the on-screen instructions for taking a photograph of yourself. The image automatically adds itself as your profile photo; edit the thumbnail to your liking once you've taken a photograph you like.
